Based in Richmond, Virginia, watershed offers a comprehensive range of design services including architecture, landscape and master planning. Our practice is primarily regional and includes residential, cultural, small-scale institutional and light commercial projects. The firm was founded as a vehicle to pursue our commitment to building better communities through an understanding of the critical interdependence of architecture and our environment. Our reliance on investigation and experimentation beyond convention further evinces our ongoing ambition toward this end.
While our project types are diverse, it is our vision as a design firm that unites our work. As the name watershed implies, our approach to design is holistic; it encompasses the totality of factors that affect and are affected by architecture. We seek to integrate functional, spatial, cultural, artistic, and technical concerns in a way that engages the larger ecosystem while elevating the architectural expression of buildings as well as the quality of the community. As our guiding principle, we believe that good design should be indistinguishable from “green” design. ‘Sustainability’ is not an appliqué; rather, it is the common thread weaving through every level of our process so that ecological and humanistic considerations are givens within that broad spectrum of concerns driving our process. In the end, our goal is always to bring forth the intangible quality that ultimately defines good architecture - - a memorable experience of place.
PEOPLE
It is the people of watershed who bring uniqueness and purpose to the work. Through our diverse backgrounds, experiences and aspirations, we are able to bring a multitude of ideas to the table in a collaborative environment to ensure a well considered, responsive and appropriate design solution.
To David, the experience of place is key. It is the lens through which design ideas are focused. Composing with light, texture, acoustics and color enhances the essential quality of a space. This notion is considered within the framework of diagrammatic clarity, function and contextual response.
Residential, educational and cultural projects have been the focus of David’s experience for the first 15 years. Experiments in fabric housing and aircraft shelters, a research aquarium, performing arts theaters, elementary through high school facilities and custom residences across the country provide a background and range of work that inform each new design solution.
David has a degree in architecture from North Carolina State University in 1988 and is a licensed architect in Virginia and Washington since 1996. He has practiced in large and small firms in Virginia, North Carolina and Washington. His work has been published in Architectural Record, Metropolitan Living, Arts and Antiques, The New American Townhouse and the New York Times, and has earned Honor Awards from AIA Seattle and AIA Northwest and Pacific Region.
Patrick’s guiding principal centers on the belief that, through the process of creating places of enduring beauty and quality for people, a holistic approach to design is the most effective means of balancing human needs with the health of the natural systems on which they depend. Given that the damage wrought by conventional building practices has resulted largely from a lack of awareness concerning the finite and vulnerable nature of ecosystems, Patrick has a deep respect for the fact that we are an integral part of the natural world and therefore are subject to its laws and limitations, especially as we engage any act of building. But, it is not enough to simply minimize impacts and conserve limited resources. Our efforts should also yield environments that are humane, meaningful and memorable, as well as functional and economical - - and it is this broader perspective that exemplifies the notion of ‘good design’. Since his undergraduate days, Patrick’s personal commitment to environmental awareness, ethics and activism has gradually become more integrated into his work. Through over 15 years of practice, he has striven to incorporate and promote ecologically sound and healthy building principles as a matter of course within the pursuit of design excellence.
Patrick is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where he earned his B.S. in Architecture in 1988 and his Masters of Architecture in 1993. He is a member of U.S. Green Building Council and is a LEED Accredited Professional as well as a founding member & Vice Chairman of the James River chapter of the USGBC. He also serves as Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Sustainable Building Network (VSBN). He is a member of the Energy and Environmental Building Association (EEBA) and the American Solar Energy Society. Patrick has also been certified through Virginia Power’s Energy Efficiency University, the American Lung Association’s “Health House” program and is currently completing coursework for full certification as a Building Biologist through the International Institute for Bau-biologie & Ecology (IBE). Patrick is also a member of the American Institute of Architects and its Committee On The Environment (COTE).
Architecture is one of the last true generalist professions. It requires cognizance of many different factors, be they technical, political, or scientific, and comprehension of their potential affect through a built intervention. It is both the pleasure and the obligation of an architect to arbitrate these factors.
Damon’s approach to architecture reinforces this view. His work looks first to those things affected by a building, be they the site, the city, or the environment, and uses them to form architecture that is contextually appropriate and catalytic. Over the course of his career, he has shaped a breadth of different project types including private residences, public and private schools, athletic facilities, art centers, multi family housing, and urban design plans.
Damon is a graduate from the masters of architecture program at Princeton University, and the undergraduate architecture program at the University of Virginia. He has practiced at several internationally recognized firms and regularly contributes to competitions, publications, and architecture organizations.
